Arts and Sciences

The Arts and Sciences (A&S) provide the foundation for the beauty and splendor of the SCA. Without them, we wouldn’t know what to wear, what to eat, or how to fight. Through A&S, we learn how people lived during our period and how useful items were created, like spinning and weaving the fabric used in clothing. In addition to researching and reading about these activities, we actually learn how to do these things. At any SCA event or demo, you can find people spinning yarn, weaving fabric or trim, embroidering garments, making jewelry, chain mail, or plate armor, or any one of a number of activities that might have been done by people before the 17th century.

In fact, just about any activity that a person in our period would have done would be considered appropriate to learn about. SCA members investigate and research such things as soap-making, alchemy, siege weapons, portrait painting, gardening, animal husbandry, herbology, cookery, etc. The SCA offers many ways to assist someone who is interested in learning a new skill or gaining knowledge in a particular field. In addition, the SCA promotes A&S by offering its members the opportunity to share work they have completed through displays or through organized competitions at SCA events. These opportunities provide a learning experience for both participants and non-participants.

Fiber Arts

The fiber arts involves nearly any activity that revolves around using a fiber to make an object. Embroidery, spinning, knitting, sewing, nalbinding, lacemaking, tapestry making, weaving and kumihimo are just a few examples of fiber arts that are practiced by our skilled artisans.

Brewing Arts

Our brewing artisans make many delicious varieties of meads, beers, wines, liquors and cordials. There is a brewers guild within our kingdom and our brewers are highly celebrated for their hard work.

Sciences

The sciences are frequently intertwined with the arts. Alchemy, astronomy, cryptography, and mathematics are just a few of the pre-17th century sciences that our members research.

Hard Arts

The hard arts are a vast group of activities that are grouped together due to the rigidity of the objects created. Antler, horn, bone and ivory carving, armor and weaponry, fletching and bowyery, glasswork and mosaics, leatherwork, metalwork, smelting and casting, sculpting and stone carving, pottery and ceramics, coin-minting, embossing, locksmithing, metallurgy, repousse, basketry, furniture construction, shipbuilding and siege creation, sleds, sleighs and sledges, tools, wheeled vehicles, and woodwork and woodcarving are all considered hart arts.

Scribal Arts

The Scribal Arts include the illumination and calligraphy that is involved in scroll making, however many of our skilled artisans have taken their art from the quill and parchment to other exciting mediums that continue to delight and amaze all who are so fortunate to behold their work.
